GST Registration Process Step By Step for New Businesses
Starting a new business in India requires proper legal compliance, and the most important among them is GST Registration. GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a unified tax system that replaces multiple indirect taxes. Any business engaged in manufacturing, trading, e-commerce, freelancing, or service-based activities must obtain GST Registration once they cross the threshold limit of turnover, or even before that if they want to operate professionally. In this article, we will explain the complete GST registration process, required documents, and offer sample images for better clarity.
Step 1: Visit the GST Portal and Start New Registration
The first step is to visit the official website www.gst.gov.in. On the homepage, click on Services → Registration → New Registration. Here, you must select your business type (Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, or Pvt. Ltd.) and enter basic details such as your Legal Name, PAN Number, Email ID, Mobile Number, and State. After entering these details, the GST portal will send you two OTPs—one to your email and one to your mobile number. Once you verify these OTPs, you can move to the next step.
Step 2: Generate TRN (Temporary Reference Number)
After OTP verification, the system generates a 15-digit Temporary Reference Number (TRN). This is very important because it enables you to fill out the full application form even if you face interruptions or need time to gather your documents. You should note down this TRN carefully.
Step 3: Login with TRN and Open the Application Form
Now, go back to the GST portal, click on TRN, and enter your TRN number. You will receive another OTP to verify the login. After verification, the complete GST registration form will open. This is where the main details of your business must be filled correctly.
Step 4: Fill Business Information in GST Form
The application form contains several sections. In the Business Details section, you need to enter the trade name, start date of business, type of business activity, district, state, and reason for registration. You also need to mention the nature of premises—whether it is a rented shop, owned property, home office, warehouse, or commercial place.
Another important part is the Promoter/Partner/Director Information. Here, you must provide the PAN, Aadhaar, photograph, and residential address of the person who owns or manages the business. If you are registering a company or LLP, you must also provide DIN details of directors.
Step 5: Provide Authorized Signatory Details
An authorized signatory is the person responsible for signing and submitting GST returns and notices. In most cases, the proprietor or managing partner acts as the authorized signatory. You can also add additional signatories if required.
Step 6: Enter Principal Place of Business
This section requires the full address of the place where your business operates. Along with the address, you need to upload supporting documents such as electricity bills, rent agreements, property tax receipts, or an NOC from the owner if you use someone else’s property for business purposes.
Step 7: Enter Bank Account Details
The GST portal also requires your business bank account details. You must enter the account number, IFSC code, and upload a cancelled cheque, bank passbook first page, or bank statement.
Step 8: Upload All Required Documents
This step is extremely important. Your GST registration will only be approved when all documents are correctly uploaded in JPG/PDF format. Below is the complete list of documents:
Documents Required for GST Registration
✔ 1. PAN Card of Proprietor/Partner/Director
PAN is compulsory for every business. You must upload a clear scanned copy of the applicant’s PAN card.

Depending on your situation, you can upload one of these:

After successful verification, your application is submitted for departmental approval.
