The commercial maritime sector that transports goods and people across oceans and seas is known as the Merchant Navy. Resident Seafarers
A seafarer's full worldwide income is taxable in India if they are considered resident’s. This cover’s their salaries from oversea’s.
Even if a portion of their income is produced outside of India, residents are still required to file an ITR if their total exceeds the basic exemption amount.
Non Resident Seafarers(NRI)
Only income earned or received in India is subject to taxation for non-resident seafarer’s. Their remuneration is not taxed in India if it is paid for services rendered outside of the country and credited straight into an NRE account.
However, in order to keep accurate tax records and to take advantage of benefit’s like loan approval’s, financial verification’s, and visa application’s, seafarers are urged to file an ITR.
